A Brief Biographical Sketch of Mr. Samitava Banerjee (1982-2021)

Mr. Samitava Banerjee was born on the 20th of September 1982 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. His father Mr. Samir Banerjee was an employee of the State Electricity Board and his mother Mrs. Priti Banerjee was a homemaker. Samitava lived in Contai, West Bengal for a while during his formative years and subsequently moved permanently to Sodepur.

He was enrolled as a student of Sodepur High School at the age of 9. He passed the Secondary (Madhyamik) Examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and Higher Secondary Examination of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education in 1997 and 1999 respectively, appearing from Sodepur High School. After completion of schooling, he enrolled in a B.Sc. degree program at the Barrackpore Rashtraguru Surendranath College, then affiliated to the University of Calcutta, but chose not to complete the course. Thereafter, he passed B.Sc. with First Class Honours in Botany from Netaji Subhas Open University and was awarded the discipline-specific gold medal of merit at an annual convocation of the university. Later, he completed his M.B.A. with First Class from the Sikkim Manipal University. For a brief period, he enrolled as a student of the University of Kalyani in the M.Sc. degree course but did not pursue it to completion.

In his professional career, he worked as a Supervisor in a private company in Belghoria for a specific period of time and ran a proprietorship business named Sampriti, a general-purpose store, from his home. He was a member of the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding (ISGPB).

He played Cricket for a local club for a few years during his youth and took a keen interest in literature. During leisure, he enjoyed watching Hindi movies, eating pav bhaji and collecting coins. He wrote and published short stories in different little magazines and was the Chief Editor of Saptannoyi (ISSN: 2350-0433), a literary serial publication, from 2014 to 2016 and was an Honorary Editor for the same serial publication afterward. He was fond of traveling and was seen by his relatives as a keen peripatetic. He visited various places, a noted few are as follows:  Kalimpong (2000), Amarkantak (2003), Puri (2006), Gangtok (2012), Yumthang (2012), and Malda (2015).

He passed away on 27th January, 2021 after a prolonged period of illness. He left behind his parents, his wife and his son (born on 15th August, 2016).
